Facts

The Humane Society of the United States filed a complaint against Olivera Egg Ranch LLC on behalf of its neighbors who have complained about the eye-burning ammonia fumes and horrific foul stench emanating from the farm for years.

The complaint alleged that the egg factory generated about 133,000 pounds of manure daily, and released the ammonia into the environment. The farm can hold up to 680,000 hens.

Damages

Plaintiffs sought $4.8 million in damages.

Result

A federal jury awarded plaintiffs $544,000 upon finding the egg farm a nuisance.
