Facts
Roni Deutch ran television advertisements promising customers that she could help them work with the IRS to solve tax problems. Deutch's customers were also told they had to pay fees up front before her firm could work on their case.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
California filed suit against Deutch, alleging her and her firm falsely advertised its services and took advantage of seniors and disabled customers by telling them their success rate was 99 percent when it was actually 10 percent, and by using fraudulent billing practices to deny refund requests.
Result
The court ordered Deutch to stop falsely advertising, accepting customer fees before reviewing customer's financial information, and billing for its services, unless it had time records evidencing the work the firm had done.
