Plaintiffs in this lawsuit were former leaders of the National United Front for the Liberation of Vietnam, an organization commonly known as "the Front," which formed after the 1975 fall of Saigon and was at one time widely held out as a hope for emigres who wanted to fight communism and return to their country. Defendant wrote a series of articles and a book depicting the Plaintiffs as celebratory assassins involved in the 1990 shooting of Virginia journalist Triet Le and his wife Tuyet thi Dang Tran. The Court ruled that Plaintiffs were public figures.
