On June 5, 1990, Plaintiff Shiela Marrow, a 43-year old mother of two, was working at her job as a receptionist at the front reception desk at Bechtel Software located at 45 Fremont Street, 2nd Floor, San Francisco California. Sometime after 10:00 a.m., she signed for a package delivered by Special T. Messenger Service of San Francisco. According to Plaintiff, she directed the messenger to put the package at the end of her desk. However, also according to Plaintiff, it was allegedly left on the floor next to her chair. Plaintiff fell forward on her hands and braced her fall with her hands and wrists. Plaintiff was off work approximately 3.5 years and could not return to her previous occupation as a clerk typist. Plaintiff had previously worked approximately 9 years typing in various other occupations.

Plaintiff's attorneys asked the jury to award Plaintiff $440,000 in special damages plus an "equal amount" for pain and suffering. Vocational rehabilitation damages were $32,000.
