Facts

In 1976, plaintiff Roberta Saum, 15, visited her priest, Reverend Donald Kimball, to receive counseling for sexual abuse she had suffered as a child. The plaintiff claimed that Kimball used that occasion to sexually abuse her. The plaintiff sued defendant Roman Catholic Bishop of Santa Rosa in 2002, when she was 41 years old. The plaintiff contended that Kimball had intercourse with her and that the sexual abuse continued throughout her teen years.

Settlement Discussions

Defendant settled with eight other alleged sexual abuse victims for $7.3 million.

Injuries

The plaintiff claimed psychological problems. She is taking medication for major depression and has been in psychotherapy throughout her adult years. In 1989, she was hospitalized for a suicide attempt.
