On Dec. 17, 1999, the plaintiff, Marshall Murphy, then aged 51, a self-employed computer consultant, entered the intersection of Harbor and Seventh Street in San Pedro on a green light. The defendant, Anita Schulz, made a left turn directly in front of him, causing him to hit a light pole head-on. Both cars were totaled. The plaintiff's air bags were deployed.
