Facts
The patient presented to Columbia Los Robles Regional Medical Center emergency room on the evening of Dec. 25, 1999, with complaints of mild to moderate abdominal pain in the right lower quadrant. A CT scan was performed. The patient's care was transferred to Dr. Roland Bastian on Dec. 26 at around 12:30 a.m. The CT scan results were reported to Dr. Bastian as showing diverticulitis and as being consistent with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Dr. Bastian did not allegedly request a surgical consult. Dr. Bastian discussed the case with Dr. Duc Nguyen, an internist, who admitted the patient in the early morning of Dec. 26. Subsequently, the patient went code blue around noon on Dec. 26. Resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful and the patient was pronounced dead.
