Facts

The subject suit involved an insurance claim arising out of the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The plaintiff had a homeowner's insurance policy issued by the defendant that included coverage for earthquake damage. After the Northridge earthquake, the plaintiff made a claim and Allstate paid him for earthquake damage to his home that was covered under the insurance policy.

Damages

The plaintiff claimed compensatory damages including over $500,000 for earthquake damage to his home, consequential damages, including loss of rents and loss of business opportunities, emotional distress damages and punitive damages. When the plaintiff rested his case, the court granted the defendant's motion for nonsuit as to the plaintiff's claim for punitive damages.
