Facts

The Stockton Police Officers' Association sued the City of Stockton and Chief Blair Ulring after it was told it could not sell beer at a fundraiser held at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds. The union was forbidden from selling alcohol in the city. It was raising money for McKinley Elementary School. The lawsuit naming Ulring came three weeks after the union declared no confidence in the chief's leadership.

Result

San Joaquin county Superior Court Judge Carter P. Holly initially dismissed the lawsuit. The city then requested that legal costs be awarded. The union was ordered to pay $36,000 for legal costs incurred by the city as a result of the lawsuit.
