Facts

Jesse Hernandez and several other plaintiffs filed a class action against the County of Monterey, the Monterey Sheriff's Office, and the California Forensic Medical Group Inc., on behalf of current and future prisoners in defendants' custody.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs alleged that defendants deliberately provided inadequate mental health care, medical care, and security to prisoners in their custody, thereby exposing them to life-threatening, substantial, and unreasonable risks of harm.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants denied plaintiff's allegations and asserted it was in compliance with all laws.

Result

The parties reached a settlement. As part of the settlement, defendants agreed to implement plans for the improvement of programs, activities, services, and care related to disability accommodation, dental care, mental health care, medical care, and security to prisoners in defendants' custody. They include, among others, infection control, custody staffing, and policy changes.
