Facts

On Sept. 10, 1993, plaintiff Omar Ali, a 53-year-old inventor, slipped and fell in the garage of an office building owned by defendant Shaul Mezrahi. The defendant had hired an independent contractor to clean on the weekend. The independent contractor, without the defendant's knowledge, began cleaning the stairway during business hours. After the cleaning, the garage floor became wet and slippery. The plaintiff brought this action against the defendant based on negligence and premises liability theories of recovery.

Settlement Discussions

The plaintiff made a settlement demand for $900,000, reduced to $300,000 while the jury was deliberating. The defendant made a settlement offer of $25,000, increased to $50,000 while the jury was deliberating.
