Facts
On Nov. 27, 1990, plaintiff Thomas P. Layman, a 50-year-old engineer, underwent a four-vessel coronary artery bypass and intra-aortic balloon insertion, performed by defendant Mark Lawrence, M.D. at defendant Long Beach Memorial Medical Center. The surgery resulted in ischemia of the right leg due to thrombus formation at the insertion site. The plaintiff claimed he suffered painful ischemic neuropathy in his right leg. He later had a heart transplant. The plaintiff brought this action against the defendants, the surgeon and the hospital, based on negligence and medical malpractice theories of recovery.
