Facts
The plaintiff worked as a staff engineer at TRW Inc.'s Space Park facility in Redondo Beach for approximately six months between September 1995 and her termination in early March 1996. After her termination, she filed a federal false claims act claim against TRW as well as a retaliatory termination claim. Her allegations involved the National Missile Defense program. The government investigated the plaintiff's allegations for three years and ultimately declined to
intervene in the case to prevent disclosure of classified materials. The false claims act claim was
ultimately dismissed on the government's motion. Only the retaliation claim remained for trial.
Settlement Discussions
Before trial, the plaintiff demanded $3 million, reduced to $357,000. The defendant made no offers to settle before trial.
Result
Unanimous verdict in favor of the defendant. The jury found that plaintiff did not carry her burden of proving possible fraud or violations of law by TRW.
