On September 24, 1992, the plaintiff, Thomas Sansen, a 43-year-old appliance sales executive, was a patron in the defendants' restaurant, Black Angus. After the plaintiff left the defendants' restaurant, he was assaulted in a nearby parking lot by a group of individuals who had been ejected from the defendants' restaurant earlier for "rowdy" behavior.
