Dr. Amparo S. Haskell, engaged the law firm of Bronson, Bronson & McKinnon to sue her husband, Wilkie C. Courter, at attorney, in a civil action over an alleged promise to convey his separate property to the community. At all times, they were married and living together. The plaintiff law firm performed legal services in the principal amount of $104,481.51 before withdrawing for non-payment. The plaintiff sued Amparo Haskell for the unpaid fees and joined her husband in the lawsuit. The plaintiff brought this action against the defendants based on Amparo Haskel's direct obligation to pay the fees and her husband's statutory obligation to pay for her common necessaries.
