Facts

Guillermo Fernando Astudillo, 28, was an inmate at the Men's Central Jail in Los Angeles on Nov. 2, 2002. He was beaten by three inmates in three separate incidents. He did not seek assistance from the guards.

Settlement Discussions

Astudillo demanded $500,000. The defense made no offer.

Damages

Astudillo sought an unspecified amount for past and future pain and suffering. Astudillo's attorney argued that Astudillo will be nervous around people for the rest of his life because of the incident and suggested that the jury should compare the award to his client, a man nearly beaten to death, to that for the death of Ron Goldman, whose family was awarded $12.5 million.

Injuries

Astudillo fractured his wrist, suffered lacerations to his face and arm, as well as blows to his head and upper body. His attackers also attempted to slash his throat. He spent six days recovering in a hospital. His medical bills were paid by the County.

Result

The jury found that Manfree was deliberately indifferent. It awarded the plaintiff $5,000.
