Facts

Plaintiff Wall Data Inc. developed a software product called RUMBA« Office. The plaintiff owned the copyright in the software. The plaintiff granted licenses to defendant Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to install the RUMBA« Office on 2,000 workstations. The defendant proceeded to include RUMBA« Office as part of a baseline of applications that was eventually installed on 6,000 workstations.

Settlement Discussions

The defendants offered to pay $160,000 before the lawsuit was filed for maintenance and technical support services but offered no amounts for the unauthorized copies. Additional settlement discussions were not fruitful.

Damages

The plaintiff sought damages of approximately $760,000.

Other Information

The jury found the defendants liable for copyright infringement and awarded $210,000. The defendants have filed an appeal.
