Facts

Juniper Networks Inc. filed an infringement lawsuit against Palo Alto Networks Inc.

Palo Alto Networks later filed a separate suit, also alleging infringement, against Juniper. Juniper then filed a counter claim in the second action.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS:
Juniper claimed to own the rights to six patents relating to firewall technology. The technology was developed in part by engineers that ultimately joined Palo Alto Networks. Juniper claimed that Palo Alto Networks used the asserted patents to produce products that directly competed with Juniper's products.

In the second suit, Juniper denied Palo Alto Networks' allegations, and counter-claimed for infringement of three additional firewall patents.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS:
Palo Alto Networks denied Juniper's allegations, and asserted various affirmative defenses.

In the second suit, Palo Alto Networks accused Juniper of infringing three patents relating to network management and media serving. Palo Alto Networks denied the allegations Juniper asserted in its counter claim.

Result

The companies agreed to settle the disputes by entering into a cross-licensing agreement on the asserted patents. Additionally, the parties agreed not to sue one another for a period of eight years.
