Facts

Orthopedic Surgeon Vincent R. Bernabe was a member of Hanford Community Medical Center's medical staff from 2005 to 2010. Multiple medical malpractice lawsuits were filed against Bernabe. Those plaintiffs, including Michael Barger, also sued the Medical Center, as well as Adventist Health California Medical Foundation and Adventist Health System West for negligence.

Bernabe performed a knee replacement surgery on Berger. His leg was subsequently amputated after a series of infections developed. Similar horror stories were cited by Bernabe's victims.

Result

There were no findings of negligence against the hospital. Adventist Health nonetheless agreed to settle 62 lawsuits. Barger received $2.08 million in the settlement.
