Facts

The plaintiff, a 69-year-old woman, was a customer at the Independence Square Mall in Canoga Park.
She tripped and fell on a walkway within the mall due to a large rectangular cement vault cover which was
owned and maintained by Southern California Gas Company.
The cover had been placed in the middle of the sidewalk, creating a dangerous condition
in the form of a "rise" and uneven walking surface.

Settlement Discussions

None prior to mediation. The settlement of $130,000 was reached at a second mediation session with Alfred Lakritz. The settlement was made up of a 50 percent contribution from the property owner and 50 percent contribution from Southern California Gas Company.

Injuries

The plaintiff sustained a left hip fracture, requiring a five day stay in a hospital for hip surgery.
