Plaintiff Gregory Buckner had worked for Defendant Courtaulds Coatings, Inc., for nearly 13 years. In March of 1990 Plaintiff was transferred from the Emeryville facility of Courtaulds Coatings to the San Leandro facility and came under the direct supervision of Defendant Walter Slater. He alleged that racial harassment and discrimination was the "norm" in working conditions at Leandro under the direction of Walter Slater. In August of 1991, Plaintiff was terminated (at 37 years of age), allegedly for stealing 2 five-gallon pails of paint from the warehouse, an accusation which became a permanent part of his employment record.

Settlement Discussions

Plaintiff contends they demanded $65,000 increased to $85,000 and Defendants made a 998 offer of $1.00 increased to a verbal offer of $25,000.
