Facts

Plaintiff Judith Bumanlag was a passenger in a car being driven by her husband along a street in Union City. Plaintiff's husband was driving at 25 to 30 mph. Defendant Judith Silbert was driving in the opposite direction. The defendant slowed down to make a left turn. While the defendant was making the turn directly in front of the plaintiff's car, the two vehicles collided. The plaintiff sued the defendant for negligence. The defendant admitted liability but disputed the extent of the damages.

Injuries

Plaintiff, who is 70 years old, suffered a broken leg and contusions to the chest, lung and heart. The plaintiff spent seven weeks in a convalescent home with a full leg cast. She claimed that she would require a full knee replacement. The defendant contended that the plaintiff's knee replacement was due to a pre-existing osteoarthritis.
