Facts

On Oct. 27, 2014, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept. Deputy Bryan Moreno responded to a report of a fight at a park adjacent to a high school and middle school, in the City of Paramount. Moreno chased suspect Oscar Ramirez Jr., ultimately fatally shooting Ramirez. Ramirez's parents brought a civil rights complaint against Moreno and the County of Los Angles pursuant 42 U.S.C. section 1983.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs contended that their son was unarmed and that Moreno used excessive force when he shot him.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS:
Defendants contended that after information had been provided to Deputy Murano regarding decedent having a weapon deputy Murano confronted him and after numerous attempts to have him show his hands decedent made a furtive movement by turning and exposing one of his hands that had previously been hidden. Moreno fearing that he was armed and threatening his life, he fired numerous rounds striking decedent in the back, side and front of his body fatally wounding him.

Result

Plaintiffs settled with the county for $1.25 million.
