Facts
Defendant Optoelectronics develops and manufactures lead salt infra-red sensors, a key component in night vision instruments utilized by the United States military. The sensors are also widely used in so-called "smart" munitions to permit such instruments as bombs, missiles, and other explosives to "see" and track their target. The company is an operating unit of Textron Defense Systems, located in Massachusetts. Plaintiff David Williams, a 59-year-old expert in infra-red technology, was employed by Optoelectronics as its contracts manager in December of 1985. In that capacity he was responsible for monitoring the company's contracting procedures, which included compliance with all government contracts. On September 27, 1991, Plaintiff was terminated from his employment with Defendant.
