Facts
UMG Recording Inc., Atlantic Recording Corp., Zomba Recording LLC, Elektra Entertainment Group Inc., Arista Records LLC, LaFace Records LLC, Warner Bros. Records Inc., Arista Music, and Sony Music Entertainment sued Escape Media Group Inc., Samuel Tarantino, and Joshua Greenberg, in connection with defendants' online music service, "Grooveshark."
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS:
Plaintiffs claimed that they owned or held exclusive licenses to the copyrights of a large body of popular sound recordings, including those in dispute here. Plaintiffs alleged that Grooveshark allowed millions of users to access a comprehensive music library that included their copyrighted sound recordings by directing their employees to upload the music to Grooveshark system.
Result
The court granted summary judgment in favor of plaintiffs on all causes of action after finding that there was no genuine issue of material fact as to plaintiffs' theory of direct or secondary liability for copyright infringement on the part of defendants Escape, Tarantino, and Greenberg.
