Plaintiff, Margaret Burris, a 37-year-old woman, allegedly suffered from lupus. On Oct. 22, 1992, she underwent a laparoscopic tubal ligation performed by defendant Dr. Michael Klein. The plaintiff subsequently experienced severe abdominal pain, a distended abdomen, nausea and vomiting. A gastroenterologist diagnosed a partial small bowel obstruction four days after surgery. An exploratory laparotomy was performed 11 days after surgery. The surgeon found a perforation in the mid-jejunum area of the bowel. The plaintiff brought this medical malpractice action against defendant Klein.
