Plaintiff, a 70-year-old female, and defendant/decedent, her longtime, male friend, were visiting Alaska in late May and early June 1998. On June 1, 1998, at approximately 2:30 p.m., they were traveling between Homer and Anchorage in a Mercury Sable and were involved in a head-on collision. The defendant/decedent lost control of the vehicle, which drifted over the center highway divider and slammed into a large recreational vehicle. The defendant/decedent suffered fatal injuries in the crash. The plaintiff was wearing her lap and shoulder safety restraints. During the accident, the plaintiff's air bags deployed.
