Facts

Calvin Cooksey sued his son, Grammy award-winning Frank Ocean, a public figure, in relation to a Tumblr post that was viewed by many.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF’S CONTENTIONS: Cooksey claimed that his son published a Tumblr post that falsely recounted an incident that Ocean allegedly witnessed as a young child. In the post, Ocean claimed that his father called their transgender waitress a derogatory, offensive, and hateful term. Ultimately, Cooksey sued for libel and slander.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Ocean argued that his statements were true and constituted statements of opinion. Further, Ocean argued that his father could not prove that the post harmed him professionally.

Damages

Cooksey sought $14.5 million in damages.

Injuries

Cooksey alleged that his future financial opportunities in the film and music industry were harmed as a result of the post.

Result

The court found for Ocean concluding that Cooksey failed to prove defamation.
