Facts

In 2016, Jaime Jimenez, previously a volunteer football coach at Benjamin Franklin High School, was sentenced to more than 36 years in state prison after pleading no contest to abusing three high school students. After sentencing, nine Doe plaintiffs filed suit against Jimenez, Franklin High School, the Glendale Junior All American Football Association Inc., and the Los Angeles Unified School District in relation to the assaults.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS: Plaintiffs contended that Jimenez gave students rides from practice, bought them gifts and invited them to his house, where he plied them with alcohol. Plaintiffs also alleged that administrators ignored several warning signs about Jimenez and his behavior.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants disputed the allegations, and contended that the school district and the football association did not know or have reason to know that Jimenez presented a risk to students.

Damages

Plaintiffs sought recovery of past and future medical costs for their counseling and therapy, as well as, recovery of non-economic damages for their past and future pain and suffering.

Injuries

Plaintiffs alleged that Jimenez sexually assaulted them, causing emotional distress.

Result

The parties agreed to a settlement in which defendants agreed to pay $8 million to the plaintiffs. The Glendale Junior All American Football Association contributed toward the global settlement.
