Facts

Jarell Washington filed suit against the San Francisco General Hospital and the City and County of San Francisco in relation to medical treatment he received at the Hospital in December 2014.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Washington claimed that an IV was left unchanged in his arm for five or more days, in violation of hospital protocol. Washington alleged that the IV was placed in his right arm in preparation for surgery on his left arm on Dec. 13, 2014, and by Dec. 16, after surgery, he was not receiving any medication through the IV. Washington claimed that the IV was left unchanged in his arm and on Dec. 17, he complained of pain in the area of the IV but his complaints were ignored. Washington contended that on Dec. 18, hospital staff determined the IV site was infected, and surgery was performed to remove a blood clot and a part of his vein. Washington argued that he would not have required the second surgery to remove part of his vein if the IV was changed or removed pursuant to hospital protocol, and therefore, the hospital was negligent.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendants neither admitted nor denied the allegations.

Result

The parties reached a settlement agreement under which defendants agreed to pay $40,000 to settle Washington's claims.
