Facts

The Uplift Inglewood Coalition filed a petition for writ of mandate and complaint seeking declarative and injunctive relief against the City of Inglewood and Real Party in Interest Murphy's Bowl over Inglewood's efforts to build a basketball arena for the Los Angeles Clippers on city-owned land.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that defendant violated the Surplus Land Act when it entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with Murphy's Bowl to sell city-owned land for the development of an arena for the Los Angeles Clippers rather than complying with the requirements of the Act. The Surplus Land Act requires local agencies, prior to disposing of surplus land, to first offer the land to various eligible entities for the development of affordable housing, parks and open space.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendant contended that its actions were proper because the land is not suitable for homes due to its placement under Los Angeles International Airport's flight path.

Result

The court denied plaintiff's request to issue a writ of mandate that would have provided them with their requested relief.
