Facts

Kevin McLaughlin, an inmate at the San Luis Obispo County Jail, complained of severe shoulder pain to the jail's medical staff hours before he was found in his cell experiencing a cardiac event. Kevin eventually died at the scene despite the efforts of paramedics and treatment from medical personnel. Kevin's family sued the county, the jail and its employees, and the Sheriff's Department for his death.

Contentions

PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS: Plaintiffs contended that defendants violated Kevin's constitutional rights through their conduct. Plaintiffs also contended that defendants intentionally ignored Kevin's medical needs.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants denied the contentions.

Injuries

Kevin McLaughlin suffered a fatal heart attack.

Result

The parties settled for $41,850.
