The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission sued defendant Sunridge Nurseries, Inc., a
grower in the grapevine nursery stock industry alleging that defendant violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 for failing to re-hire five Filipino seasonal farm workers, some who were long term employees, in retaliation when the workers complained of racial discrimination to defendant.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that defendant retaliated against them when defendant failed to re-hire plaintiffs when plaintiffs complained to defendant of racial discrimination.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendants denied plaintiffs' contentions.
Result
The parties agreed to settle the case for $237,500. In addition, Defendant agreed to revise its work policies and procedures, and provide training to staff employees and managers of current anti-discrimination and retaliation laws in order to prevent any future discrimination and retaliation in the workplace.
