Facts

Ryan Twyman was being investigated for felony gun possession. On June 6, 2019, two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies found Ryan's vehicle near an apartment complex after searching for him for weeks. One of the deputies opened Ryan's rear passenger-side door with his weapon drawn and Ryan began backing out of the parking space, pushing the deputy into the middle of the parking lot. The two deputies fired 34 shots at the moving vehicle, killing Ryan. Plaintiffs Tommy and Charles Twyman filed a wrongful death action against the County of Los Angeles for the death of their son, Ryan.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiffs contended that defendants used excessive force against Ryan, who was unarmed. Plaintiffs contended that the deputies violated department policy by shooting at a moving vehicle when the occupant posed no threat of deadly force aside from the moving vehicle itself.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendant denied plaintiff's contentions.

Result

The parties agreed to settle the case for $3,900,000.
