Facts

Ysabel Villegas was a Los Angeles Police Department elite robbery-homicide division detective. She eventually transferred out of her department and sued the her senior lead officer, Danny Reedy, and the City of Los Angeles shortly afterwards.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that she was engaged in an affair with Reedy and that Reedy beat her when she tried to end the affair. Reedy also secretly took sexually explicit photos of plaintiff, which he threatened to share if plaintiff did in fact end the affair. Plaintiff contended that when she ended the affair, Reedy sent the photos to her colleagues. Plaintiff contended that although she reported the events that occurred, nothing was done, leaving her unprotected from Reedy's abuse. Plaintiff contended that Reedy's abuse caused her to take a leave of absence for her emotional distress. She contended that when she returned, she was transferred from the robbery-homicide division in retaliation for the complaints.

DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants denied the contentions and contended that plaintiff did not have a sufficient factual basis to support her contentions.

Result

Before trial, the city agreed to pay $1,500,000 to plaintiff on behalf of itself and defendant to settle plaintiff's claims.
