Facts
Dominga G. was charged with shoplifting in Antelope County, California. She was assigned a public defender, Emmanuel Bart-Plange, whom Dominga met at the courthouse. Following their interactions, Dominga sued the County of Los Angeles and her public defender for sexual assault.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that defendants told her to meet Bart-Plange in another room to discuss her case. While in the room, defendants created an uncomfortable sexual environment by making advances at her. Bart-Plange initiated oral copulation and sex with plaintiff. Plaintiff contended she gave in out of fear she would not receive adequate representation otherwise and that she might receive a harsher punishment.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants denied the contentions.
Result
Los Angeles County agreed to pay $450,000 to plaintiff to settle the claims against defendants.
