The People of the State of California filed suit against consulting firm Mckinsey & Company Inc. for its role in the opioid crisis.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended defendant contributed to the opioid crisis by promoting marketing schemes and consulting services to opioid manufacturers, including OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma, for more than 15 years. Plaintiff contended that McKinsey advised Purdue on how to maximize profits from its opioid products, including using specific messaging to get physicians to prescribe more OxyContin and circumventing pharmacy restrictions to deliver high-dose prescriptions. Moreover, plaintiff contended that McKinsey deleted documents and emails related to their work for Purdue after states began to sue Purdue's directors.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendant denied the contentions and any alleged wrongdoing.
Result
The case settled in the amount of $573 million $59.6 million of which California will receive and will use to abate damage caused by opioids to families and communities in California.
