Facts
In October 2019, the Kincade Fire burned around 77,758 acres and destroyed 374 structures. In July 2020, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection's investigation determined that Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E)'s equipment was the cause of the Kincade fire. In September 2020, the Zogg Fire burned approximately 56,338 acres and destroyed around 231 buildings, killing four people. In March 2021, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection concluded that PG&E equipment was the source of the Zogg Fire. Sonoma County, City of Santa Rosa, Town of Windsor, City of Cloverdale, and City of Healdsburg sued PG&E regarding the 2019 Kincade Fire, and Shasta and Tehama counties filed suit against PG&E regarding the 2020 Zogg Fires.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF CONTENTIONS: PG&E's failure to inspect and repair its electrical equipment proximately caused the fires and it conducts its business with a conscious disregard for the safety of the public.
DEFENDANT CONTENTIONS: Defendant denied all material allegations.
Result
The case settled for $43,360,000.
