Facts

Reversible Connections LLC was the exclusive licensee of a particular patent for double-sided USB-compatible plug connector. Unlike traditional USB connectors, which only function when inserted right-side-up, the unique features of this plug allowed it to be inserted into a USB port in either orientation and function properly. G.B.T. Inc. is a California corporation engaged in the business of manufacturing and selling computer motherboards, laptop and desktop computers, and other electronics that have USB Type-C connection ports, which use double-sided USB-compatible plugs that can be inserted facing up or down. On 2017, Reversible Connections LLC filed suit against G.B.T., alleging patent infringement.

Contentions

PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that by manufacturing devices with USB Type-C ports defendant had infringed its license; that defendant had knowledge plaintiff was the sole licensee of the patent due to notice given by plaintiff; and that defendant intended its infringement of the licensed patent.

DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendant denied any wrongdoing and all of plaintiff's material allegations.

Result

After a several year stay due to pending PTO proceedings, the court granted G.B.T.'s motion to dismiss the suit with prejudice after the underlying patent had been reexamined and had some claims canceled.
