Katrina L. Ramos worked as an adjunct professor for Cambridge College. On April 22, 2021, Ramos filed a lawsuit on behalf of herself and on behalf of all others similarly situated against Cambridge College.
Contentions
PLAINTIFFS' CONTENTIONS: Plaintiffs contended that defendants failed to pay minimum wage as required by law; that defendants failed to provide rest periods and pay rest period premiums; that defendants failed to reimburse necessary business expenses; that defendants failed to pay wages timely during employment; that defendants failed to pay all wages earned and unpaid upon separation; that defendants failed to furnish accurate itemized wage statements as required by law; and that defendants violated California's unfair competition law.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendants denied any wrongdoing and all of plaintiffs' material allegations.
Result
A settlement was reached wherein defendant admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to pay $150,000 to settle class members' claims. Defendant also agreed to pay $20,000 to pay penalties for claims asserted under the Private Attorneys General Act. Of that amount, 75%, or $15,000, will go to the Labor and Workforce Development Agency, and 25%, or $5,000, will go to the PAGA settlement class.
