On August 23, 2021, Marion Williams filed suit in against Udemy, Inc., a technology company that provides an online learning and teaching platform for violations of Consumer Legal Remedies Act, False Advertising Laws, and Unfair Competition Laws.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff contended that defendant used false reference prices in order to induce consumers to purchase its online courses. The false reference prices, when compared with the purported sale prices, reflected substantial savings, misleading consumers into thinking they were obtaining a significant deal.
DEFENDANT'S CONTENTIONS: Defendant denied all material contentions.
Settlement Discussions
The parties engaged in settlement discussions that were facilitated by Robert Meyer on January 28 and March 25, 2022, and by Shirish Gupta on December 12, 2022.
Result
The parties settled for $4 million. Defendant agreed to refund $4 for each online course purchased at a discount with reference to the original/comparison price with the total claim limited to $40 per claimant.
