In September 2015, Patrick Jackson was hired by the City and County of San Francisco in its Recreation and Park Department as a dispatcher for park rangers. On February 23, 2022, Jackson sued the City and County in San Francisco Superior alleging defamation claims and violations of the Federal Employment and Housing Act.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: Plaintiff, an African-American male, contended that starting around January 2020, he was subjected to harassment by his supervisor. For example, when plaintiff began to grow out his hair, his supervisor, a Caucasian female, would often comment on his "nappy" hair texture. Other incidents included spreading rumors about plaintiff losing his job; reprimanding plaintiff for the same actions that went unaddressed with those individuals; sexualizing plaintiff's race; and retaliating against plaintiff when he verbally complained about her actions.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants generally denied all material contentions.
Result
The case settled for $50,000.
