Facts
The California Civil Rights Department filed a lawsuit on behalf of a Black man, Abdifatah Abdullahi, who alleged he was subjected to ongoing discrimination after leasing a room in San Diego County and was told by his landlord, Peter F. Deluke, "Your people are always making trouble." The complaint sought injunctive relief prohibiting future discrimination as well as compensatory and punitive damages. After its investigation, the CRD found cause to believe that defendants subjected Mr. Abdullahi to the threat of violence, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation because of his race.
Result
The parties agreed to settle the case for $20,000. Defendants also agreed to attend anger management and fair housing training.
