Facts
Between June 16, 2020 to June 15, 2023, the U.S. Department of Labor's Wage and Hour Division investigated Fast Trip gas station and convenience store. Julie Su, as the U.S. Secretary of Labor, filed a lawsuit, alleging that Fast Trip Sacramento dba Fast Trip Food Store, and its owner, Amrik Singh, interfered with the investigation by bribing and instructing its employees not to speak with investigators; having employees falsify timecards; and threatening to report employees' immigration status.
Result
The case settled by consent judgment. The consent judgment required defendants to comply with wage-and-hour laws including: pay mandated wages; ensure accurate employment records; and, maintain appropriate payroll practices. Moreover, defendants were required to pay $57,340.26 in minimum and overtime wage back pay; $57,340.26 in liquidated damages; $17,500 in compensatory damages; and finally $4,655 in civil penalties for a total of $136,835.52.
