On May 3, 2023, Jessica Tapia sued the Jurupa Unified School District and its Assistant Superintendent for employment and constitutional violations including free speech, free exercise of religion, and due process.
Contentions
PLAINTIFF'S CONTENTIONS: According to plaintiff, she was wrongly terminated for her unwillingness to comply with defendants' directives regarding transgender students which included referring to students by their preferred pronouns, allowing students to use bathrooms and locker rooms matching their gender identity, and refraining from expressing religious beliefs with students or on social media.
DEFENDANTS' CONTENTIONS: Defendants did not admit any fault or wrongdoing and denied all material contentions. The decision to settle was made in conjunction with the District's self-insurance administrators and in the best interest of their students.
Result
The case settled for $360,000.
