Facts
Plaintiff, a 36-year-old mother of 5 children, presented to Defendant county's clinic in September 1990 for prenatal care. On September 11, 1990, and October 1, 1990, Plaintiff was tested for diabetes and found to be normal. In February 1991, Plaintiff came to Defendant county hospital for examinations and was sent home each time to await the commencement of her labor. On the evening of February 27, 1991, Plaintiff came to that hospital for testing; she was experiencing contractions and a decreased level of amniotic fluid was noted. She was sent home with instructions to return the following morning for special testing. At 9:42 a.m. on February 28, 1991, Plaintiff came to Defendant county hospital bleeding and in labor. At 11:10 a.m. she was connected to a fetal monitor and it was immediately noted that the baby's heartbeat was severely depressed. An emergency cesarean section was then ordered and performed.
