Facts

The patient in this case was Alvin Galpren, a 76-year-old retiree. On July 23, 1992, he was admitted to Defendant Mission Hospital for a mild heart attack involving the circumflex artery. After diagnosis and anti-clotting agents were given, an angiogram was performed by Dr. Donald Rediker, a cardiologist. It was decided that bypass surgery would be appropriate. Dr. Drewry Morris was contacted, but did not see the patient until the following afternoon. Surgery was delayed by Dr. Morris and Dr. Thomas in that they diagnosed what was thought to be a carotid artery problem. Surgery was again delayed as the patient developed a urinary tract infection. Dr. Rediker returned from vacation on July 28, 1992. It was decided that, because of the infection, an attempt at angioplasty to "bridge" the patient toward elective bypass surgery would be performed. By early afternoon, the patient began showing signs of restlessness and agitation. By early evening, he needed to be sedated and restrained with leather restraints. The patient arrested later that evening and expired. Autopsy showed death was due to acute hemorrhage. Plaintiffs were the decedent's 4 children.
