Facts
On Nov. 23, 1994, plaintiff Cheryl Gadow, a 47-year-old sculptor, was admitted to UCI Medical Center after being struck by an automobile while standing on a sidewalk. The plaintiff sustained multiple injuries from the accident, including fractures of the femur, tibia and fibula. Defendant UCI Medical Center treated the plaintiff patient for multiple fractures and surgeries. The plaintiff patient experienced complications from the placement of an arterial line in her right ulnar artery. As a result of these complications, the plaintiff patient developed ischemia and gangrene in her right hand, requiring its amputation. The plaintiff patient and her husband brought this action against the Regents of the University of California UCI Medical Center and Rochelle Chamberlin, the driver of the automobile, based on negligence and loss of consortium theories of recovery.
