On March 14, 1995, decedent, Jasmohan Sharma, a 58-year-old retired attorney, presented to the emergency department of defendant Methodist Hospital with complaints of chest pain and burning. He was seen and evaluated by defendant Dr. Tobias Lau. An EKG was obtained and dyspepsia diagnosed. He was discharged with instructions to return to the emegency room if he had increased chest pain or heartburn. He did not return, and he died the following morning. The plaintiffs, the decedent's wife and children, brought this action against the defendants based on a medical negligence theory of recovery.
