Facts
The plaintiff, a 57-year-old physician, was employed by the county of Los Angeles since 1977. In 1996, the
plaintiff was transferred from his assignment in the division of cardiology at the countyÆs Rancho Los Amigos
Medical Center to its Olive View UCLA Medical Center as part of a workforce reduction. The plaintiff was
assigned to the ambulatory care unit, where he replaced a younger physician who was terminated as a result of
the workforce reduction.
When the county subsequently attempted to transfer the plaintiff back to a medical center, the plaintiff filed a
grievance claiming age discrimination.
Damages
The plaintiff claimed loss of earnings, emotional distress damages and damages for stress-related retinopathy leading to blindness.
Injuries
The plaintiff claimed that he suffered emotional distress and that he had stress-related retinopathy which led to blindness.
